"A Fool Am I"

This disc was auctioned by Cooper-Owen in November 2004. It was advertised as a John Lennon demo. Indeed, it sounds like a demo and indeed, it sounds like Lennon but it doesn't take too close of a listen to realize that it's not John Lennon.

The auction provoked some discussion on Yahoo's Beatleg Group. That discussion can be read below. Thanks to the research of "jason1014", it has been determined that this is the same track that is found on the vintage vinyl bootleg titled Goodnight Vienna.

I've set up an appointment with Cooper Owen auction house to listen to an excerpt of the recording over the phone once they've made a copy. This should take place in the next few days. I'm not sure this will be conclusive -- I asked them for an mp3 excerpt, but they hadn't planned to make one available -- but I intend to record the phone call, of course...

Does anyone have an mp3 of the recording from Goodnight Vienna that they could post? I'd like to have it to compare, if possible.

Stay tuned,
Jason

The auction house sent me a larger jpg of the acetate. The only thing typed on it is "A Fool I Am" and "45 RPM" along with the familiar EMIDISC text. No mention of John Lennon's name, which doesn't necessarily mean anything. My doubts are growing, though.

They're calling me Monday morning, CST. Next update shortly thereafter.

This is indeed the track from the Goodnight Vienna boot. The gentleman at the auction house was kind enough to play the entire recording for me, which goes on a bit longer than the "released" version. He said there had been some question as to its authenticity but no one else had yet listened to it. For whatever it's worth, I let him know that it had been circulated on bootleg and that the consensus of opinion is that it's not John Lennon. It's also obviously not the Cilla Black song, which should have been easy enough for them to verify before they mentioned it in the auction description. Hopefully no one will bid on this item. I'd hate to think of someone getting screwed out of £500 in the belief that he or she is getting a rare Lennon demo.

I don`t get it - after all this is a EMI-acetate! So did somebody fake it? Or has it been misidentified be the person typing the label? Very strange. Anyway, thanks for the effort!
